Practice & Presence, our annual conference, helps health care practitioners imagine and engage their vocations with clarity, faith, and joy.

For a weekend each fall on Duke University’s campus, TMC faculty, alumni, students, as well as nurses, physicians, therapists, chaplains, and other health care practitioners from across the country gather:

  • To tune eyes and hearts to how God is present in their work in health care
  • To seek the tranformation of imaginations and practices through engagement with scripture, theology, and Christian history
  • To grow in friendship with one another
  • To rest, reflect, and respond to God’s love for them and for the world

Each year, the gathering begins Friday afternoon and ends Saturday evening and includes plenaries, small group seminars, worship, shared meals, time for rest, and fellowship with other Christian health care practitioners.

Past Gatherings

Over the years, attendees have learned about Ignation spiritual practices, encountered Christian innovations in health care, wrestled with ways to be present to suffering, and reimagined their work as tending to fellow creatures rather than fixing machines. Past gatherings have featured several special guest speakers, including: Kate Bowler, Stanley Hauerwas, Victoria Sweet, Patrick T. Smith,  Brian Volck, and many more!
