Duke Divinity School has launched the Asian House of Studies, a formational community that will support Asian and Asian-American students; build a network of Asian and Asian-American students, alumni, and church leaders; and provide resources for Asian theological studies. This new House of Studies will complement other houses of study at Duke, including denominational houses as well as other houses focused on supporting and forming Christian leaders from other ethnic communities.
“Asian-American Christians have emerged as a significant part of the sociopolitical and religious landscape of America, and the Asian and Asian-American community at Duke Divinity has also grown considerably,” said Sangwoo Kim, a consulting professor and senior director of the Methodist House of Studies, who will co-direct the new house with Jung Choi, a consulting professor and senior director of Wesleyan Formation Initiatives. “The Asian House of Studies, in collaboration with the student-organized Asian Theology Group, will offer a more structured support system for the Asian community at the Divinity School.”
The Asian House of Studies will also work with other Asian and Asian-American faculty members to develop courses and a certificate in Asian Theology and Asian Church Studies, support Spiritual Formation programs in Asian theology and contexts, lead fundraising efforts for programs and scholarships, collaborate with the Office of Admissions on recruitment, partner with other groups at Duke Divinity on anti-racism efforts and building diverse Christian communities, and build partnerships with other schools, organizations, and programs at Duke University and beyond.
“We are delighted to enhance our growing houses of study emphasis with the launch of the Asian House of Studies,” Dean L. Gregory Jones noted. “We are grateful to Sangwoo Kim and Jung Choi for their vision and leadership, and we look forward to the significant opportunities the Asian House will provide to strengthen the overall mission and work of Duke Divinity School.”
