Duke Divinity Alumnus Thomas McGlothlin, D’07 G’15, has received a 2019 Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise.
McGlothlin is one of 10 recipients of the 2019 Lautenschlaeger Award for his book, “Resurrection as Salvation: Development and Conflict in Pre-Nicene Paulinism,” published in 2018 by Cambridge University Press.
His book addresses the topic of God and spirituality by examining the reception of Paul’s link between resurrection and salvation, according to which resurrection is the full flowering of the Spirit’s transforming work conforming the Christian to the resurrected Christ. The book offers close readings of the topic in key theologians of pre-Nicene Christianity, demonstrating the profound effect of the Pauline link between resurrection and salvation on early Christian theology – not only eschatology, but also anthropology, pneumatology, ethics, and soteriology.
The Lautenschlaeger Award is given annually to 10 scholars from around the world and across academic disciplines. Previous winners have included Duke Divinity School Professors Jennie Grillo, Anathea Portier-Young, Kavin Rowe, and Brittany Wilson.
McGlothlin will join the other recipients for an award ceremony and colloquium this May at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. While there, he will receive the Lautenschlaeger Award’s 3,000 Euros prize money.
