Hybrid In-person For Alumni For Students General Audience

The Asian House of Studies and the Global and Intercultural Formation Office will host a special guest lecture with Prof. Sung Uk Lim, a New Testament scholar and professor at Yonsei University in South Korea, who will present a lecture titled, “Han Kang, Historical Trauma, and the Decolonizing Spirit in John.”

Biography

Professor Sung Uk Lim is an associate professor at Yonsei University’s College of Theology and United Graduate School of Theology in Seoul, South Korea. He earned his undergraduate degree in religious studies from Seoul National University and pursued his Master of Divinity at Seoul Theological University. He later studied biblical linguistics at the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley and completed his doctoral studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School, focusing on the Gospel of John. 

Lim’s doctoral research explored the "otherness" of minor characters in the Gospel of John, which is explored in his recent book, Otherness and Identity in the Gospel of John (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021). Currently, his research focuses on issues of ethnicity and race in the works of Josephus, as well as the socio-economic and sociological contexts of Galilee during the New Testament period.
