Duke Divinity School will host the 2025 meeting of the North American Luther Forum, which gives Luther scholars in the U.S. and Canada an opportunity to share research, collaborate, and discuss mutual interests. The event will take place April 4–6.

The forum features plenary sessions, work groups, worship, and a panel discussion on Luther and the Council of Nicaea in commemoration of the 1700th anniversary of the world's first ecumenical council. Plenary topics include “Joyful Love in a Sinful World: Luther’s Marriage in Its Theological Setting," "‘The Spirit and the Gifts Are Ours’: Martin Luther and the Charismata," and "Freeing Luther from Himself: Acknowledging Slavery’s Logic and Correcting Its Presence in Luther’s Theology."

“The meeting of the North American Luther Forum at Duke Divinity School is part of a larger effort to revitalize the study of the Reformation at Duke and to signal that it is a premier place to study the birth of the Protestant revolution.”

The forum, also called the North American Forum for Luther Research, began in 1999 at Luther Seminary under the guidance of Professors James Kittelson of Luther Seminary and Robert Rosin of Concordia Seminary. It was patterned after the Nordic Luther Forum with the collaboration of Carl Axel Aurelius, who was a guest lecturer at Luther Seminary at the time.

Said Duke Divinity Professor of the History of Christianity Ronald Rittgers, who is organizing the 2025 event, “The meeting of the North American Luther Forum at Duke Divinity School is part of a larger effort to revitalize the study of the Reformation at Duke and to signal that it is a premier place to study the birth of the Protestant revolution.”

The deadline for registration is March 1, and the cost to register is $50. Find more information about the event.
