Duke Divinity School Professor Stephen B. Chapman has written a robust theological commentary with an explicitly Christian reading of the biblical book of 1 Samuel. The book, 1 Samuel as Christian Scripture: A Theological Commentary, will be published in April by Eerdmans Publishing Co. and is intended to serve as a resource for both pastors and academics.

Chapman is an associate professor of Old Testament at the Divinity School, director of graduate studies in religion at Duke University, and an ordained American Baptist minister.

Chapman's commentary reveals the theological drama at the heart of the biblical book of 1 Samuel as it probes the tension between civil religion and vital religious faith through the characters of Saul and David, according to the publisher.
