Kenneth H. Carter

Bishop-in-Residence; Consulting Faculty

Bishop Carter has taught courses in Christian leadership and the mission of the church (in the Doctor of Ministry program) and Methodist studies (for Master of Divinity students) in the Divinity School, where he is also a fellow in the Center for Studies in the Wesleyan Tradition. He serves as resident bishop of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, and was previously president of the Council of Bishops of the United Methodist Church, a moderator of the Commission on a Way Forward, and resident bishop of Florida. He is co-chair of the United Methodist–Roman Catholic Dialogue, a member of the United Methodist–British Methodist Concordat, and a member of the Wesley Works editorial board. He is the author of 18 books, most recently Unrelenting Grace: A United Methodist Way of Life (Abingdon Press, 2023).

Duke Divinity Course Prepares Students for UMC General Conference

Several dozen Duke Divinity students learned about church governance, met with bishops, and expressed hope for their vocational call in a course to prepare for the United Methodist Church General Conference.
