Dr. Carder served as a pastor for thirty-two years in The Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church. While pastor of Church Street UMC in Knoxville, Tenn. in 1992, he was elected as a bishop and assigned to the Nashville Area for eight years and subsequently to Mississippi area where he served until 2004.
He is the author of six books, Sermons on United Methodist Beliefs; A Bishop’s Reflections; Living Our Beliefs: The United Methodist Way; Who Are We? The Doctrine, Mission, and Ministry of the United Methodist Church, Leader’s Guide; Ministry with the Forgotten: Dementia Through a Spiritual Lens; and a memoir, Shifting Margins: From Fear and Exclusion Toward Love and Belonging.
He has also contributed articles to several journal and periodicals including The Christian Century and Faith and Leadership. Bishop Carder has served numerous leadership positions in The United Methodist Church, including president of Discipleship Ministries, member of the University Senate, chair of the Curriculum Committee of the United Methodist Church, and Chair of the Commission on Theological Education. He served for four years as the United Methodist Council of Bishops’ liaison to the Association of United Methodist Theological Schools.
