Allen Verhey, Robert Earl Cushman Professor of Christian Theology, passed away today at the age of 68. He died peacefully at home.
Verhey's work focused on the application of Christian ethics, especially in the area of medical and health practice. He was published widely and was the author, editor, or co-editor of 12 books, including most recently, The Christian Art of Dying. Verhey was director of the Institute of Religion at the Texas Medical Center for 2 years and served as the Blekkink Professor of Religion at Hope College for 10 years before coming to Duke Divinity in 2004.
[Update March 3 at 12:45 p.m.: The funeral service has been rescheduled to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4 at Duke Chapel.] A visitation will take place at First Presbyterian Church in Durham from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 2. Both the funeral and visitation are open to the public. A recording of the service is available online.
