Every Tuesday in February, the Divinity School will feature the Sankofa Black Alumni Preaching Series to celebrate the distinct contributions of the school’s alumni of African descent. Alumni will preach during the 11:25 a.m. worship service in Goodson Chapel.

The series was established last year during Black History Month. The word "sankofa" derives from the Akan language of Ghana and translates as "reach back and get it." The Office of Black Church Studies (OBCS) and the Black Seminarians Union (BSU) chose this name to demonstrate how they are inspired and humbled by the prophetic and transformative ministries of so many of Duke Divinity School's African-American alumni, said Eboni Marshall Turman, director of the Office of Black Church Studies.  

“Every day is a day to celebrate Black history,” said Marshall Turman, “and in this season when we intentionally focus on the contributions of persons of African descent, the OBCS and BSU are privileged to ‘reach back’ to those who have walked these hallowed halls before us so that we might glean new knowledge and fresh vision.”
