Duke Divinity School will gather to celebrate and dedicate the school's first formal gallery space in the 00 Westbrook hallway. The celebration festivities will include a series of events including an evening gallery reception featuring music and players from the New Caritas Orchestra and several events surrounding a mini-residency by renowned artist Steve Prince. 

All events are free and open to the public. Please see below for registration forms for the workshops. The lecture and reception do not require registration or RSVPs.

These events are made possible by a partnership between Duke Initiatives in Theology and the Arts and the Office of Black Church Studies. Additionally, St. Joseph AME is generously co-sponsoring the community quilt workshop on April 2.

The Armour of God // linocut prints // 00 Westbrook Hallway // available for viewing anytime the Divinity School Building is open

A gallery of new linocut prints from Steve Prince are on display in Duke Divinity School's 00 hallway. The Armour of God is inspired by the multiple images of biblical armour and the theme of divine protection in times of turmoil in scripture and history. Full exhibit description included later on this page.

Prince will also offer “The Power of the Armour of God: The Art of Steve Prince.”The presentation will explore the relationship between the Christian faith and the process of making art, focusing on the work installed and the theme of divine protection. No registration required. 0014 Westbrook. Lunch provided for first 40. The lecture will be streamed and recorded via Zoom.

April 2, 6 PM. St. Joseph AME church // 2521 Fayetteville St, Durham, NC 27707

In this two-hour creative quilt-making project, participants will build on previous workshops offered by artist Steve Prince. The workshop will open with Prince introducing the process and philosophy of quilt making as storytelling. By individually creating something in community, we inherently create connection. The squares will be sewn together and be part of the mile-long quilt, affectionately known as the DOG Street mile-long quilt. Workshops require no prior knowledge or experience with quilting. Light refreshments provided. Registration is strongly encouraged due to limited space. Parking is readily available in the church lot.

The gallery celebration events will culminate in an evening program featuring players from the New Caritas Orchestra, accompanied and conducted by DITA Director Dr. Jeremy Begbie. The program will include original music written by Begbie and inspired by the installed work as well as remarks from from a variety of faculty and staff at Duke Divinity School. 

Public parking is available in the Bryan Center Parking Garage at 125 Science Drive. ADA parking is available in the surface lot adjacent to the garage. Overflow options include the Science Drive Lot and Science Drive Garage. We recommend leaving ample time  to park, as parking availability varies based on the time of day and demand. Parking is typically $2 per hour, and there is no daily maximum.

New Caritas Orchestra

Comprised of top musicians of faith from around the country, the New Caritas Orchestra was convened by DITA Director Dr. Jeremy Begbie with the vision to support Christian musicians around the country. The gallery opening will feature a series of original works written by Begbie and performed by players from this renowned orchestra.

About the Artist

Steve Prince

Steve A. Prince is a mixed media artist, master printmaker, lecturer, educator, and art evangelist. Prince received his BFA from Xavier University of Louisiana and his MFA in printmaking and sculpture from Michigan State University. He has taught middle school, high school, and community college, and has conducted workshops internationally in various media. Prince has shown his art internationally in various solo, group, and juried exhibitions and has participated in several residencies including artist-in-residence at Segura Arts Center at Notre Dame University, Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Hyattsville, Md., the Atlanta Printmakers Studio, and the University of Iowa to name a few. Prince is the recipient of the 2010 Teacher of the Year award from the City of Hampton, and he is a 2020 recipient of a VMFA (Virginia Museum of Fine Arts) Grant. A native of New Orleans, La., he currently resides in Williamsburg, Va. He is the director of engagement and distinguished artist-in-residence at the Muscarelle Museum at William and Mary.
