Jean-Luc Marion
Professor Emeritus, Université Paris-Sorbonne; Professor Emeritus, University of Chicago; Fellow of the Académie Française

Jean-Luc Marion is one of the most influential contemporary philosophers and Catholic theologians, known for his contributions to phenomenology, metaphysics, and the philosophy of religion. He holds emeritus positions at the Université Paris-Sorbonne and the University of Chicago and was elected to the Académie Française in 2008, receiving the title of immortel in 2010.

A leading figure in modern phenomenology, Marion has developed a philosophy of givenness in works such as Reduction and Givenness, Being Given, In Excess, and Givenness and Revelation (the 2014 Gifford Lectures). He has also engaged deeply with theological and metaphysical questions in God Without Being and The Idol and Distance. His scholarship extends to the history of philosophy, particularly Descartes, as well as theology and patristics.

Marion’s contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Grand Prix de Philosophie de l’Académie Française, the Karl Jaspers Prize, and the Humboldt-Stiftung Prize. In 2021, he was awarded the prestigious Ratzinger Prize for his lifetime achievements in theology. His works, translated into multiple languages and now in several editions, continue to shape contemporary conversations in philosophy and theology.
