The Methodist House of Studies at Duke Divinity School will host a grant writing workshop led by Rev. James Kim on November 2, 2021, 12:40pm - 1:30pm. The workshop is open to all in the Duke Divinity School community. If you are not able to attend in person, please email Dr. Sangwoo Kim to receive a Zoom link.

Rev. Kim is an ordained elder in the North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church. He is currently on voluntary leave to pursue a master’s degree in public administration at NC State University. He is also serving as a director of communication and outreach at Aldersgate UMC in Durham, N.C. Previously, Rev. Kim served for five years at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, a small rural United Methodist Church in Caswell County, N.C. During that time, he was heavily involved in community development work, specifically addressing food insecurity. Partnering with the Food Bank and Resourceful Communities, he was able to secure around $70,000 grant funding to implement innovative ways to address food insecurities and spark economic development for the county. With the experience of community development and engagement, he is also currently interning at NC Medicaid innovation Strategy Office, where it is implementing a $650 million Healthy Opportunities Pilot program soon. The program aims to address the unmet needs such as food insecurity.

Rev. Kim says, "The grant writing workshop will not reveal any secrets to secure big grant funding. But, the workshop will focus how to help you, as a community leader, think about how to set up successful grant applications, implementation, and results. Being upfront and honest, I have faced plenty of rejections from big time donors. I am not an expert, but I would be happy to share my own experiences and lessons learned.”
