The Center for Christianity and Scholarship and the Theology, Medicine, and Culture Initiative will host a public lecture entitled Equal Dignity: A Commitment in Search of a Rationale with guest speaker Dr. Gilbert Meilaender.

From bioethicists to makers of international law, everyone seems to agree that we must affirm the dignity of human persons—but they don’t agree on what that means. As a result, “human dignity” is often invoked in support of opposing viewpoints. Gilbert Meilaender, distinguished professor of theology at Valparaiso University, will trace and distinguish several rival concepts of dignity in this lecture.

Professor Meilaender is the author of many books and articles in the field of Christian ethics. Among his books are Friendship: A Study in Theological EthicsBioethics: A Primer for Christians, The Way that Leads There: Augustinian Reflections on the Christian Life, Not by Nature but by Grace: Forming Families through Adoption, and Thy Will Be Done: The Ten Commandments and the Christian Life. He is co-editor (with William Werpehowski) of the Oxford Handbook of Theological Ethics. Professor Meilaender is a fellow of the Hastings Center and was a member of the President’s Council on Bioethics from 2002 to 2009.
