Duke Divinity School will sponsor the 2023 David C. and Virginia R. Steinmetz Lecture featuring Carlos Eire, Ph.D., the T. Lawrason Riggs Professor of History and Religious Studies at Yale University. His lecture is titled “Catholic Reform as a Reaffirmation of the Miraculous and the Impossible." Eire will explore how Catholic belief in miracles was affected by the Protestant rejection of post-biblical miracles as well as of mystical ecstasies that involved the body as well as the soul.

Eire's research and publications focus on the social, intellectual, religious, and cultural history of late medieval and early modern Europe, with a concentration on the Protestant and Catholic Reformations and the history of popular piety, the supernatural, and death.

The lecture, part of an annual series, is open to the Divinity School community and the public. Registration is not required.
