DurhamCares takes a holistic and community-driven approach modeled off the eight key components of Christian Community Development. We create initiatives for collaboration and teach principles that foster healthy community engagement in a variety of settings.
Our mission inspiration is based on the story of the Good Samaritan – the call to love God first and love our neighbor as ourselves (Matt 22:37-39). Our vision is the biblical concept of shalom (Jer. 29:7), a comprehensive flourishing for all people. We envision a city where there is peace and justice, where there is nothing missing and nothing broken – where Durham residents love their neighbors.
Reporting directly to the DurhamCares Executive Director, this dynamic self-starter and gifted communicator will carry out the vision of the Durham Pilgrimage of Pain and Hope program. This will include shaping and developing the theologically-informed values and methodology of pilgrimage, organizing and facilitating the weekend pilgrimage and other related events for custom groups and the wider Durham community, and cultivating relationships with pilgrimage speakers, participants, sites, and advocacy groups. This will be done in collaboration with the Executive Director and in coordination with the strategic goals of DurhamCares.
To coordinate the Durham Pilgrimage of Pain and Hope program, a partnership between DurhamCares and the Duke Center for Reconciliation.
Pilgrimage Philosophy and Implementation
Learn, understand and continue to develop the values, methodology and curriculum for the pilgrimage
Partner and collaborate with the Duke Center for Reconciliation on all aspects of the pilgrimage
Create itinerary for three open pilgrimage weekends and seven custom pilgrimages, including scheduling sites, speakers, facility rental, volunteers, transportation, materials and catering
Manage volunteers for all aspects of the pilgrimage
Pilgrimage Communications and Administration
Promote, make connections, and develop contracts for seven custom pilgrimages
Create and manage communications for the pilgrimage program
Coordinate outreach and promotion for pilgrimages in churches, schools, ministries, social media networks, and public media
Build relationships in the Durham community with potential pilgrimage speakers and sites
Engage in advocacy efforts around recognizing marginalized histories, racial justice, inclusive and equitable development, and other issues related to the pilgrimage
Speak about the pilgrimage and the value of pilgrimage at public events, churches, schools, ministries, and any context that wants to learn
Write about the pilgrimage in local and national publications
Track and organize all data about the pilgrimage, including past participants, interested groups and individuals, past and potential speakers and sites, pilgrimage feedback, income and expenses, volunteer information, pilgrimage alumni, and donor information
Oversee budget for the pilgrimage program and keep detailed records of income and expenses
Participate in fundraising efforts for the pilgrimage and overall DurhamCares operating budget
Pilgrimage Alumni Network Cultivation
Send a monthly email to pilgrimage alumni about events and opportunities
Organize and host at least three events per year that are connected to the pilgrimage values
Organize at least two events per year for relationship-building among pilgrimage alumni
Support pilgrimage alumni through ongoing communications and one-on-one meetings
Share opportunities for financial partnership with pilgrimage alumni
Skills & Talent:
Experience with program management – designing programs, managing execution, monitoring results and making adjustments as necessary
Experience facilitating groups of people from various ethnic and theological backgrounds
Excellence in written and oral communications
Proven ability to take initiative and motivate oneself
Volunteer management experience
Experience with engaging community members through one-on-one and group meetings
Proficient in word processing, spreadsheets, design software, and database systems
Bachelor’s degree and theological degree preferred, or commensurate experience
Mature Christian faith as understood by the Apostles’ Creed
A passion for holistic Christian ministry, the 8 key components of of Christian Community Development (www.ccda.org), and for the vision, mission and values of DurhamCares
Knowledge of, experience with, and passion for the church in all its complexity
Training in, and commitment to, racial equity
A love for Durham and a strong connection to the city
Commitment to working hard and strategically, while also being attentive to rest and self-care
Ability to work with a team within the structure and strategic goals of an organization
