Throughout February, the Divinity School will feature the Sankofa Black Alumni Preaching Series to celebrate the distinct contributions of the school’s alumni of African descent. Alumni will preach during three Tuesday worship services in Goodson Chapel at 11:25 a.m.
Conversations with Black Seminarians Union students will be held in Room 110 Gray Building of the Divinity School after each sermon. Lunch will be provided.
Preachers for this year are Bishop Clifton Buckrham, D '85, minister at Resurrection Fellowship United Holy Church in Greensboro, N.C.; the Rev. Donna Battle, D '05, chaplain of Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C.; and Bishop Kenneth Monroe, D '76, from the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church's Eastern NC Atlantic Episcopal District.
The Sankofa Black Alumni Preaching Series was established in 2014 during Black History Month. The word "sankofa" derives from the Akan language of Ghana and translates as "reach back and get it."
