These semi-monthly seminars, presented by the Theology, Medicine, and Culture Initiative at Duke Divinity in collaboration with the Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities & History of Medicine are a regular gathering of faculty, students, clinicians, and others interested in the intersections of theology, medicine, and culture during the fall and spring semesters. The Transformation of Religious Perspectives on Medicine and Healing During the Reformation and Its Modern-Day Implications
Join TMC co-director Farr Curlin, M.D. and Ekaterina Lomperis, Ph.D., to discuss her recent book. In it, Lomperis looks to recover Martin Luther’s little-studied theology of medicine, arguing that Luther prized the proper use of medicine as a divinely preferred means of actively resisting bodily suffering. Curlin and Lomperis will explore how this early modern “reformation of healing” might inform contemporary practices of medicine and efforts to reform those practices.

Conference on Medicine and Religion
The annual Conference on Medicine and Religion is a leading forum for discourse and scholarship at the intersection of medicine and religion. TMC is proud to be a long-time cosponsor of this conference. Each year, several TMC faculty, students, and alumni contribute through workshops, papers, and poster presentations. A highlight of the conference is the evening gathering we host for TMC friends and colleagues, offering time for shared conversation and connection.
We are social, vulnerable beings who need each other. We are not isolated, disembodied atoms ... I have been led to a new community of people, a new network that I will be colleagues and friends with for the rest of my life. [TMC] nurtures the very difficult profession that we as health care practitioners have been called to do.
