The Center for Studies in the Wesleyan Tradition at the Duke Divinity School sponsors a Summer Wesley Seminar as part of our program to promote research, writing, and publication in the field of Wesleyan studies broadly conceived. This seminar supports the work of scholars who are engaged in serious study of the Wesleyan heritage by making available the research resources of Duke University and by bringing together, for conversation and study, a group of persons who are working in various areas of the field.
The Summer Wesley Seminar is led by Richard Heitzenrater and Randy Maddox. It includes up to ten other participants—senior and junior scholars working on books, articles, dissertations, or presentations in the field. The seminar is designed to allow members to devote the majority of their time to research and writing, with gatherings once or twice a week where we share expertise with one another and focus on issues of research, teaching, and publication of common concern.
The Summer Wesley Seminar runs for four weeks, with participants expected to spend most of this time in Durham (minimum three-week commitment). Members are given library privileges in the Duke University library system, including access to all electronic databases and to our special collection holdings in Wesley and Methodist studies. The Center for Studies in the Wesleyan Tradition helps in arrangements for housing, and makes available parking passes for the duration of the seminar. The center also provides some financial support for each accepted participant (usually the equivalent of the cost of housing) in order to help make their participation feasible. Otherwise, all personal expenses are the responsibility of the participant.
Since space is limited, participation is by application. The application requires a brief description of the project on which the participant will be working during the seminar, including some indication of its eventual form of publication or presentation. The project should engage some aspect of the broad Wesleyan tradition. The list of previous Summer Wesley Seminar participants (since the first seminar in 2004) provides a sense of the range of projects supported.
Due to the meeting of The Oxford Institute of Methodist Theological Studies in Summer 2018, Duke Divinity School with not hold a Summer Wesley Seminar in 2018. Potential seminar participants are encouraged to apply to the Oxford Institute. Our next Summer Seminar will be in June 2020.
