African American Outreach Guide
In collaboration with ICEOL, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization's Caring Connections has produced the African American Outreach Guide for hospices and other organizations interested in improving their outreach efforts to African Americans in the community.
While the African American population accounts for more than 12 percent of the overall U.S. population, fewer than 10 percent of those entering hospice programs across the country are African American. Among Medicare decedents ages 65 and older, this disparity is even more pronounced. In addition to offering outreach strategies and tools, the guide provides a review of end-of-life issues relevant to African American communities. Caring Connections and ICEOL are committed to ensuring that African American patients and their families receive quality end-of-life care that honors and respects their traditions.
