First United Methodist Church in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, is searching for a passionate youth leader who will partner with parents and adult volunteers to lead middle and high school students to grow into deeply committed disciples of Jesus Christ. Our bold vision for children and youth ministry is based on God’s call as processed by considerable discernment and prayer. The youth pastor will provide leadership and direction for all church activities concerning youth ministry within a vision and framework already developed by the church (based on the Orange/XP3 model). This full-time position includes visioning, planning, implementing, and supporting youth ministry under the broader vision, mission and guidelines of the church, which encompasses a continuum for children, youth and families from birth to college. The primary focus of the youth pastor is to lead youth and their families to develop a strong Christian faith in the United Methodist tradition by building and supporting teams of adult volunteers to teach, mentor and sustain ministry activities. These activities include weekly Sunday evening fellowship and small and large group faith development time as well as community service and missions, Bible studies, conferences, fun events and maintaining a presence in the lives of students outside of church. Ministry Position Description: This position provides leadership and direction for all church activities concerning Youth Ministry at First United Methodist Church, Rocky Mount, NC (FUMC). This includes visioning, planning, implementing, and supporting youth ministry under the guidelines of the Family Ministry Team Vision Statement and the vision and mission of the church. The primary focus of this position centers on the Christian formation of youth and their families through the building of teams that vision, activate, and sustain youth ministry. Results of Ministry: The Youth Ministry Team and other youth ministry teams/committees have developed a comprehensive strategy that is contextual to the needs of the community of Rocky Mount, and aligns with the vison and mission of the Family Ministry Team and the vision and mission of FUMC. The administrative and financial aspects of the Youth Ministry Team are diligently supervised. Youth ministry teams are organized and long-term strategies are developed that form a pattern of sustainable long-term ministry, including the annual recruiting of new leaders and monthly training of existing leaders. A balance of family/home life is practiced in accordance with appropriate boundaries in the form of self-care spiritually, mentally, and physically. Weekly/Seasonal ministry programs for sixth though twelfth grades, such as Sunday Morning Ministry, Sunday Night Ministry, Confirmation, Mission Experiences, and Youth Trips are overseen in a team-based manner. Youth ministry teams will be trained to identify, invite, and welcome unchurched youth and their families. The yearly youth ministry calendar is planned and publicized in a timely manner to the congregation. Curriculum is selected/written for all areas of youth ministry that aligns with the Family Team Vision Statement and the vision and mission of the church. Appropriate forms of communication (meetings, social media, email, blogging, etc.) are maintained with youth and their parents in person and online. An active participation in the worshipping life of FUMC is maintained through Sunday Morning Worship, Small Groups, and Special Events. The Safe Sanctuaries Policy of FUMC is annually reviewed, updated, and practiced. Time and responsibilities in ministry to youth and their parents are maintained on campus and off campus in the everyday lives of the families of the church. Qualifications: A committed and growing relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord. A dedication to the church and ministry covenant promoting an environment of support and unity. A history of experience in youth discipleship ministry. A passionate desire to disciple youth and families as Christ followers. A familiarity and commitment to Wesleyan theology, the Orange strategy of family based ministry, and the empowering ministry strategies of Sustainable Youth Ministry are preferred. An understanding and support of the United Methodist Church’s doctrine in all areas of faith and practice. An ability to network, lead, and build a team while functioning as a team member. A knowledge of Microsoft Office, Constant Contact, and an aptitude for learning new systems.
