JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION: Pastor CONGREGATION SIZE: 75-150 (Depending on the Season) REPORTS TO: The Elder Board GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Senior Pastor provides spiritual, pastoral, outreach, administrative, and servant leadership to the congregation of Summer Street Church so that the congregation might fulfill its mission as a light of Christ on the island of Nantucket. The Senior Pastor relates to, and connects with, multiple generations within a diverse congregation. In addition, the pastor represents the congregation within community organizations and at activities so that the church can support and engage with the surrounding community. Recognizing the importance of spiritual health and one’s personal relationship with God, the Senior Pastor takes time for regular prayer, Bible study, rest, and recreation. Lastly, the Senior Pastor extends God’s grace to others and leads by example as one who is relational, authentic, transparent, and humble. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23 DETAILED DESCRIPTION: Worship: • Conduct worship services that enable people to hear the word of God and participate in personal and corporate relationships with him. • Plan, in consultation with the Elder Board and volunteer teams, all elements of the regular worship services of the Church. • Prepare and deliver sermons and lessons that are relevant and edifying to the church community. • Prepare and lead all special worship events of the Church, including Christmas Eve, Easter Sunrise Service etc. as well as weddings and funerals unless otherwise provided for by the Elder Board Spiritual Formation: • Guide the spiritual formation of the congregation through teaching, preaching, prayer and leadership. • Work with the Staff, Volunteers and Elder Board to ensure that the Church is provided with opportunities to pray, study the Bible and practice spiritual disciplines, e.g. Sunday School Classes, Prayer Services and Bible Studies. • Work with the Elder Board and Missions Committee to ensure that the Church is provided with opportunities to be involved in hands-on service opportunities within and beyond the Church. • Work with the Deacon Board and Finance Team to encourage the congregation to give time, talents, and resources in service to God. Administration: • Oversee all areas of the congregation’s ministry in consultation with the Elder Board, Deacon Board, and other relevant committees. • Support, supervise, manage and all paid employees. • Ensure that the office is run efficiently and effectively. • Build a sense of teamwork among church staff and Committee Chairs. Hold and/or attend regular meetings to coordinate the ministries of the church and facilitate communication. • Enable Elders, Deacons, and Committee Chairs to better perform their duties through training and support. Outreach: • Have a heart for outreach and diversity. • Understand the challenges of sharing the gospel in a community with many differing views and opinions. • Make a concerted effort to engage with new visitors and encourage them to take an active role in the church. • Provide training opportunities to the congregation for outreach and evangelism. • Work with the Missions Committee to support various mission opportunities, to encourage the Church in giving to missions, and to involve the Church in personal mission service. Pastoral Care: • Visit or contact church members to encourage their involvement or to address their personal needs (especially all homebound church members). • Provide pastoral care in conjunction with other staff, committees, and deacons through visitation, counseling, and prayer. • Make appropriate referrals when necessary and quickly respond to crisis situations which arise in the congregation. Professional Qualifications: • A devout personal faith in Christ. • Graduate theological degree from an accredited seminary or divinity school. • At least five years of experience in a similar ministry position is preferred. Working Conditions: • The position of Senior Pastor requires great flexibility in hours available for work, including evenings and weekends. • The pastor should be in the office a sufficient amount of time for accessibility to members of the congregation and for regular communication with members of the church staff.
