At its best, our Youth Group is a microcosm of the church’s vision. Our Youth desire to be growing as earnest followers of Jesus. They are deepening their faith through learning about God and loving God. They are sharing God’s love with their hands through missions and with their hearts in witnessing to their faith with friends and the community. They are making Christian friendships with each other and with the entire church, friendships that we pray will be there for them over the course of their lives. Activities We have an active and excited group of Youth at PUMC, ranging from 6th graders to 12th graders. The following are activities that we would appreciate being part of our program: • Weekly youth group meetings on Sundays • Annual Youth Sunday in worship • Annual trips (missions, Pilgrimage) • Special fellowship activities and trips (e.g. ski trips, etc.) • Regular service opportunities (e.g. Stop Hunger Now, etc.) • Opportunities for participation in greater congregational events (e.g. worship, missions, etc.) • Fundraising activities (e.g. lunches, carwashes, etc.) • Activities offered through the summer months • Engaging Sunday School, small group opportunities, etc. Values As our Youth group reorganizes, these are some values that are important to us: • Provide leadership for gatherings, balancing youthful fun, while establishing respectful boundaries for behavior and encouraging spirituality. • Provide opportunities to separate within the Youth group into smaller groupings for devotional time (by age, by gender, etc.) • Develop and use avenues for input from our youth and their parents • Maintaining support and communication between parents and staff Qualifications • Passion and energy for working with youth • Team player • Balances relating with youth and setting boundaries for discipline • Experience in leading youth • Higher education and/or certifications for ministry • Gifted in teaching, organization, communication, relationships • Committed for several years of service • Familiar with the United Methodist Church, including our theological approach and stances • Possesses and communicates clearly a deep, personal faith Expectations & Duties The Youth Director will: • Provide Christian support for the youth of PUMC and their families • Develop and administer activities for the PUMC youth outlined above • Identify and equip volunteer leaders to participate in youth activities • Provide Christian outreach to the youth of the Pittsboro community • Provide administrative oversight to the youth program (scheduling, budgeting, etc.) • Help bridge our Youth into all aspects of the life of the church • Connect our Youth program with the greater UMC (District, Conference activities) • Communicate with the Pastor to ensure knowledge of plans and fruit of activities • Regularly review and consistently enforce Safe Sanctuaries policy • Provide assistance in worship opportunities at the church • Work with the staff team to implement other ministries and activities through and for the church • Assist PUMC in the fulfillment of its vision of “Growing Disciples of Jesus in Faith, Hope, & Love” Supervision & Terms • General supervision provided by Staff Parish Relations Committee • Direct supervision provided by Pastor • Regular office hours to be determined with Pastor. • While this is a salaried position, we expect duties to equal about 15 hours/week, compensation at $17.50 hour; one week of paid vacation, with understanding that additional time off can occur with approval of Pastor • Training and continuing education provided as needed with Pastoral approval • As a Christian organization, staff behavior is to conform to the norms of Christian ethics. • Employment is at will.
