Director of Congregational Care

PURPOSE The Director of Congregational Care is responsible for promoting spiritual, emotional and physical health of the congregation. RESPONSIBILITIES Collaborate with pastors to extend pastoral care as appropriate. Participate in the life of the congregation as a member. Attend weekly staff meetings. Communicate with staff about congregational needs. Pray with staff on a regular basis. Coordinate and extend congregational care through practical assistance (examples may include creating care teams, hospital visits, home visits, accompanying to doctor appointments, organizing meal calendars, praying before surgeries, serving communion to the homebound, checking in with new parents, other needs as they arise.) Recruit, train and equip lay people to serve and to lead in areas of congregational care. Minister alongside the pastoral staff to those who are grieving. Design, encourage, and shepherd ministries of prayer and counsel to those in need of physical, emotional, and spiritual care. Identify common threads of congregational needs. Together, with the diaconate and sessional committees, offer educational and participatory opportunities to address these particular issues in the life of the congregation (examples may include grief, mental illness, addictions, cancer, aging parents…). Facilitate or oversee support groups (examples may include cancer, grief, mental illness...) Participate actively in the Congregational Care Committee. Develop, in collaboration with this committee and others, creative ways to encourage broad congregational involvement in the spiritual, emotional, and physical care of members. Collaborate with the Director of Music and Worship to plan Worship on the Longest Night services. Thoughtfully and prayerfully extend invitations to this service. Participate in monthly services for communion and healing. Act as a first resource for planning funeral and memorial service receptions. May create and train teams to host receptions. Oversee the annual budget for the Congregational Care Committee. Oversee divinity students who seek CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) in a congregational care setting. Send Love Fund referrals, as appropriate. Assist with congregation-wide events, as needed.
