POSITION DESCRIPTION Position: Director of Christian Formation Supervisor: Associate Rector General responsibilities: The Director of Christian Formation has three main priorities for 2022-2025: 1. Regular Educational Programming: To plan and ensure the running of regular education programs for children on Sunday mornings and Sunday afternoon/evening youth gatherings (grades 6-12), and occasional special events. 2. Lay Ministry: To renew and train the pool of parish lay ministers for children’s, youth, and family ministry, including providing training and administrative support for teachers. 3. Intergenerational Community : To collaborate with the staff and lay leadership of St. Matthew’s for the development of intergenerational worship, formation, and fellowship at St. Matthews. The Director of Christian Formation will work closely with the Associate Rector, volunteer teachers, and a revitalized children and youth advisory committee in program design and implementation. In addition, the Director of Christian Formation will aim to establish supportive relationships with children, youth, and parents, and communicate with the parish about program offerings. The Director of Christian Formation is expected to provide an average of 28 hours per week. Regular weekly work days on site during the program year (August-May) will include Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays. Additional time each week will be scheduled at the Director’s discretion to fulfill program responsibilities. Planning and recruiting tasks and occasional program offerings will continue in the summer months with a more flexible schedule. Detailed roles and responsibilities ● Administrative ○ Confer bi-weekly with Associate Rector and attend staff meetings ○ Maintain appropriate safety procedures for classrooms and programs ○ Develop and administer budgets for program areas ○ With maintenance staff, maintain classroom and program spaces ○ Recruit, train, and support children and youth lay leaders/ teachers, ensuring they are up to date in safe church training ○ Supervise nursery attendant and coordinate volunteers ● Communication ○ Write monthly newsletter articles ○ Write weekly updates and reminders to families ○ Other communication as needed (bulletins, instagram, etc.) ● Relationship Building ○ Commitment to praying regularly for all children, youth, and parents at St. Matthew’s ○ Keep a directory of all children and youth at St. Matthew’s, ensuring followup with first time visitors, and check-ins with less active members ● Educational Programs ○ General ○ In consultation with Associate Rector, staff and volunteer leaders, plan lessons and programs for children, youth, and families, with an emphasis on intergenerational programming ○ Re engage and chair an Advisory Committee for Children and Youth, whose principal role will be to advise and give hands on support for events and programming. ○ Work closely with the clergy and parish musician to plan and support children and youth participation in worship, including choirs, acolyting, and other roles ○ Facilitate development of children’s choir working with the Director of Music and lay volunteers in charge of children’s choir. ○ Youth ○ offer appropriate opportunities and training for youth leadership. This includes support and training for the youth to be model leaders at youth gatherings and to be responsible for establishing a culture of openness, hospitality, reverence, and respect. ○ Work with the Associate Rector to plan and lead biennial youth confirmation classes ○ Facilitate and provide leadership support for special youth programs including: ○ Two youth retreats annually when possible ○ An annual youth service, and end-of-year celebration ○ Community Service Projects ● Special Programs ○ Coordinate enrichment offerings, including but not limited to the children’s activity bags available for the services ○ Coordinate and plan annual programs, in conjunction with staff and volunteers, such as a Christmas Pageant (December) , Secret Pal’s Breakfast (February) , Easter Egg Hunt (April) and the annual Youth Service (May/June) Requirements ○ A firm, longstanding commitment to Christian life and formation, preferably in the Episcopal church. ○ A strong desire to build the program at St.Matthews over the next 3-5 years. ○ Excellent written and oral communication skills ○ Excellent relational skills. Affable, creative, and collaborative. Able to communicate and work well with different groups (parents, children, parishioners) and easily relate to children, youth, and young families. ○ Strong organizational and administrative skills. Experiences at cultivating and managing volunteers. ○ Keen sense of boundaries, awareness of vision balanced with sustainability based on resources and initiative within the parish. ○ Strong commitment to intergenerational mindset. Rooted in scripture and tradition and open to new ways of understanding and embodying them. ○ Faithful, modeling in what they do and how they relate the virtues of generosity, kindness, respect, advocacy, patience, joy, and commitment to justice. ● Desired Qualities o 2-3 years experience with Children and Youth programming: setting priorities, planning curriculum, and teaching children and youth; familiarity with different curriculums, especially Godly Play. o Track record showing ability to recruit and maintain a volunteer corp, preferably in education

Salary Range: Starting range at $35,000 for 28 hours/week.
