Communications Specialist

Job Summary:

The UUMC Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing the church’s strategic communications plan. This includes understanding the church’s mission as well as its target audiences in order to design effective communication. The role requires development of internal and external communication materials, including items such as original articles, photographs, videos, social media posts, graphics, and publications.

Responsibilities include:

•    Develop and execute UUMC’s documented communication plan in coordination with clergy, staff and the communications committee; Measure communication plan results and provide ongoing revision

•    Develop, edit and manage website content, including original stories, articles, designs, photos, and videos, ensuring integrated connections to multimedia and social media

•    Develop, edit and manage e-newsletters, bulletins, brochures, printed newsletters and other communication materials

•    Develop and maintain a social media strategy and manage UUMC’s social media accounts

•    Establish policies and style guidelines for staff and church members who assist with church communication; Guide and train others in communication skills as needed

•    Manage vendors and contractors related to communication, for example, website developers, freelance writers, graphic designers, and printers

•    Build and maintain relationships with local media outlets

•    Measure results of all communication efforts with qualitative and quantitative methods

•    Oversee multiple projects and ensure communication tasks are completed in a timely manner

•    Communicate clearly with clergy, staff and church members; act as a visible and helpful staff member at church events



•    Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (Journalism, Marketing, Communication, etc.)


•    Two+ years of experience working in the field of journalism or marketing communications

•    Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Facebook, YouTube

•    Active participation in associations, groups and peer committees


•    Passion for Christian faith and enthusiastic support of UUMC’s mission to love God, serve others, and build Christian community

•    Excellent and enthusiastic written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

•    Ability to train and coach both staff and volunteers in communications strategy and best practices, including the use of chosen technologies for communications (i.e. Mail Chimp, Constant Contact, etc.)

•    Ability to develop appropriate communication goals

•    Great organizational skills and attention to detail

•    Understanding of current and future digital trends across all platforms

•    Demonstrated dedication to professional growth and willingness/ability to learn at a fast pace

•    Ability and enthusiasm to learn other software, for example, content management systems or other social media platforms

•    Team-orientated person with experience leading and working in diverse groups successfully

•    Sensitive to the interpersonal dynamics of working within a church or non-profit institution.

•    Recommend and substantiate concepts and strategies to leaders and peers

Also highly desirable:

•    Personal and/or professional experience within a church environment

•    Photo, video and design skills

•    Understanding of user experience, content strategy and public relations

•    Some flexibility in terms of work hours, as some church events happen on evenings and weekends

•    Participation in professional groups related to the communication industry
