Throughout February, Duke Divinity School will feature the Sankofa Black Alumni Preaching Series to celebrate the distinct contributions of the school’s alumni of African descent. Alumni will preach during three Tuesday worship services in Goodson Chapel at 11:25 a.m.
Conversations with Black Seminarians Union students will be held at the school after each sermon. Lunch will be provided.
Preachers for this year's series are: the Rev. Mycal Brickhouse D '16, assistant director of Alumni Affairs at Duke Divinity and senior pastor of Cary First Christian Church in Cary, N.C.; the Rev. Chalice Overy D '06, associate pastor of Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh, N.C.; and the Rev. Justin Coleman D' 05, senior pastor of University United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill, N.C. Overy and Coleman also are Office of Black Church Studies pastoral associates.
The Sankofa Black Alumni Preaching Series was established in 2014 during Black History Month. The word "sankofa" derives from the Akan language of Ghana and translates as "reach back and get it."
