National Public Radio had a story recently on the aging brain  that reports mostly good news: both physical and cognitive exercise can have positive effects on brain health.
Although the ability to multi-task diminishes with age, and middle-agers make more sloppy mistakes, we can, with applied practice, grow and change our brains, strengthening short-term memory and decision-making. Physical exercise also enlarges areas of the brain involved with memory, decision-making, and planning.
So, reward yourself for that long walk with some time in a chair spent doing the crossword puzzle. Or look up something really obscure on your internet search engine of choice, and follow where it leads.
