The Duke Divinity School Office of Black Church Studies and the Office of the Dean are sponsoring a lecture titled “What’s All the Fuss About? Jeremiah Wright, Prophesying in the Public Square of the American Civil Religion.”
Dr. Clarence “C.G.” Newsome, distinguished church leader in residence at the Divinity School, will present the Feb. 24 lecture at 5:15 p.m. in York Reading Room at the school.
Newsome served previously as the president of Shaw University and as the dean of Howard University’s School of Divinity. He holds three degrees from Duke and was a member of the Duke Divinity School faculty for eight years. Newsome now serves on the Duke University Board of Trustees. He is a former member of the Divinity School’s Board of Visitors and the Duke University Alumni Association Board of Directors.
Newsome has served on several major committees of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada. He is a member and past president of the Society of Black Religion, a think tank of scholars engaged in studying the religious experience of African Americans.
