On Oct. 11, 56 alumni from the class of 1961 were inducted into the Half Century Club at a dinner held in their honor in the Divinity School's York Room. The Half Century Club recognizes alumni from Duke Divinity School who graduated 50 years ago.
Five alumni were able to attend in person. Reginald Ponder has retired after many years of ministry as clergy in the United Methodist Church. David Townsend retired in 1997 after serving in both parish ministry as well as 13 years of service as a US Army chaplain in Germany, Vietnam, and Okinawa. James Hobbs also served as a United Methodist pastor until his retirement in 2001. Lon Chestnutt remains active in Rotary Club, and retired in 1997 from a career that included campus ministry, parish ministry, and denominational leadership within the United Methodist Church. William Will served as a US Navy chaplain as well as other United Methodist Church appointments; he also received a D.Min. degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1985.
Said Betsy Poole, associate director of annual giving and alumni relations, "The Divinity School Alumni Association is pleased to welcome these newest members into the Half Century Club, and to recognize their lifetime of service and ministry since their days at Duke Divinity School."
