The THIRTEENTH Oxford Institute of Methodist Theological Studies
August 12—19, 2013
Christ Church, Oxford

Theme: Wesleyan Communities and the World Beyond Christianity

The 2013 Oxford Institute of Methodist Theological Studies will examine ways in which Methodists (Wesleyan Christians) engage with persons and institutions outside of traditional Christian communities. How can we understand the world beyond traditional Christianity as our “neighbors”? How have Methodists from the Wesleyan age to the present related to persons of other religious faiths, to persons with no traditional religious faith, with secular institutions and movements? How do the Christian scriptures, traditions of other [than Wesleyan] Christian communities, and Christian ecumenical works help in our attempts to relate to persons and institutions outside of Christianity? How do Wesleyan communities today relate to communities, societies, groups that have a different comprehension of life, the world, and basic values as these are manifested not only in religions, but in political or economical ideologies and stands, ethical attitudes, philosophical systems? How are our ways of relating to non-Christian communities related to systems of power, both those embedded in our own ecclesial and political contexts, and systems of power of those whom we propose to engage in dialogue? What are the ethical implications of our communal life today as we relate to post-Christian societies and cultures?

Anticipated fee for registration and basic room and board: £800
