JOB DESCRIPTION

Position        Assistant Priest
        
Hired By        Rector, in consultation with parish search committee and following the guidelines established by the Bishop of the Diocese of East Carolina
        
Accountable To        Rector
        
Purpose        Provide pastoral, priestly, and administrative support to the Rector of St. Philip’s for the benefit of the St. Philip’s congregation.

Qualifications & Gifts

•    Have a love of God and demonstrate a commitment to following the way of Christ
•    Have a Master of Divinity degree (or equivalent) from an accredited seminary/university
•    Have taken training (or will receive training within first year of employment) in Sexual Misconduct, Child Abuse and Anti-Racism
•    Be able to work in an environment requiring confidentiality, sensitivity, and compassion

Time Commitment

•    This is a full time position.  In general, the Assistant Priest will work five days a week, usually measured as ten to twelve units of mornings, afternoons, or evenings in various combinations reflecting the demands of this ministry.  
•    Working more than two evenings per week is not expected.
•    It is expected that the Assistant Priest will preserve at least one continuous twenty-four hour period each week solely for personal and family time.
•    Exceptional circumstances aside, the Assistant Priest commits to serving St. Philip’s Episcopal Church for a minimum of two years prior to entertaining other ministry opportunities.

Responsibilities

•    With the Rector, share in the Sacramental duties of all priests
•    As scheduled by the Rector, share in officiating/celebrating and preaching at regular worship services
•    Lead annual Confirmation/Inquirer’s Classes
•    Develop a ministry to, and for, ‘lapsed members’
•    Participate in activities of the Southport/Oak Island InterChurch Fellowship
•    Identify and participate in a local ministry whose objective is to serve the poor, the hungry, the homeless, or the disenfranchised
•    Share in the councils of the wider church as a member of Diocesan councils/committees
•    Coordination and oversight with Christian Education Committee of all Christian Education programs
•    Participate in the two year transition program administered by the Diocese known as Fresh Start
•    Attend the Stephen Leaders course
•    Ex-officio member of St. Philip’s commissions and committees
•    Attend vestry meetings

Salary & Benefits

•    Annual compensation (Salary & Housing Allowance) in accordance with Diocese of East Carolina Compensation Guidelines
•    FICA Supplement to be paid in addition to Annual Compensation
•    Health Insurance (family coverage) to be provided by St. Philip’s through the Episcopal Church Medical Trust
•    Pension, through the Episcopal Church Pension Fund, to be paid by St. Philip’s Church
•    Moving expenses (to Southport) to be paid by St. Philip’s Church
•    Four weeks vacation, with pay, per year (includes 5 Sundays)
•    $1,500 annual Continuing Education expenses (two weeks)
•    Holidays off, per the church calendar, excluding Sunday and Feast Day worship services (unless on approved vacation)

Addendum

Prior to approval to hire by the Bishop, Rector, and St. Philip’s Vestry, candidate must pass required Driver’s License, criminal, and credit background checks.
