The Upper Room Disciplines 2018: A Book of Daily Devotions
Duke Divinity School faculty members Stephen B. Chapman and Laceye Warner are among 53 writers from diverse Christian backgrounds featured in a best-selling book of daily devotions encouraging people to immerse themselves in Scripture and apply its truths to their lives.
The devotional guide, The Upper Room Disciplines 2018: A Book of Daily Devotions, also features devotions by former Duke Divinity professor Willie Jennings as well as alumni Jennifer Copeland, executive director of the N.C. Council of Churches and former United Methodist chaplain at Duke University, and G. Kevin Baker, lead pastor of First United Methodist Church in Graham, N.C.
Upper Room Books annually publishes the devotional guide, which offers a selected Bible reading, a meditation on the Scripture passage, and a prayer or suggestion for reflection each day. The Scriptures are drawn from the Revised Common Lectionary.
The scriptural devotions and prayers for each week of the year are written by different scholars, pastors, and other professional writers and church leaders. It's widely used, especially in Methodist circles. Other authors writing for the 2018 book edited by Rita Collett include Mary Lou Redding, Amy Oden, Jan Richardson, Andy Dreitcer, Anne Broyles, Safiyah Fosua, Jim Melchiorre, Lynne Deming, Max O. Vincent, Pam Hawkins, and Marshall Jenkins.
Daily devotions include: “God Our Redeemer” for Jan. 1-7 by Chapman; “Behold God’s Redeeming Love” for March 5-11 by Jennings; “Naming Our True Identity” for July 16-22 by Copeland; "Spotlight on the Soul" for Oct. 8-14 by Baker; and “Expecting a Loving God” for Nov. 26-Dec. 2 by Warner.
