New Book in Series Edited by Moody Smith
A new book in a series edited by D. Moody Smith, George Washington Ivey Professor Emeritus of New Testament, has been published by University of South Carolina Press. Caiaphas: The High Priest by Adele Reinhartz is the latest book in the series Studies on Personalities of the New Testament.
As the high priest who oversaw the trial of Jesus, Caiaphas has long been considered one of the villains of the New Testament. In this book, Reinhartz examines the historical, biblical, literary, and cultural depictions of this character. Her research includes Second Temple Judaism, images of Caiaphas in medieval art, and Mel Gibson’s film The Passion of the Christ.
In tracing the connection of the written and visual representations of Caiaphas to a persistent strain of anti-Semitism, she also opens new space for Jewish-Christian dialogue.
The series includes books by Alan Culpepper, Clifton Black, and Beverly Roberts Gaventa, all of whom earned a Ph.D. in New Testament from Duke and studied with faculty at Duke Divinity School.
