A Beginner's Guide to Messiaen
"Messiaen 101" is meant as a guide for listeners, either privately or in groups. DITA encourages community members to gather for listening parties in order to experience one or more of the movements together. Messiaen's music is rich, and sharing impressions with others afterward can help create space for the music and deepen the listening experience.
This competition is open to all students, faculty, staff and alumni of Duke Divinity School, and their immediate families, and is not intended solely for accomplished photographers or long-standing Messiaen-lovers. All that is needed is a digital camera, a CD player or access to YouTube, and the willingness to listen to at least one movement of Visions de L'Amen.
Up to seven photographs may be entered (one for each movement of Visions de L'Amen), but single entries are also welcome.
Messiaen 101 includes an introduction to the composer, the piece, and some thoughts intended to spark the imagination.
