Bishop PalmerBishop Gregory Palmer of the Illinois Conference joined Stephen Gunter, associate dean for Methodist Studies and research professor of evangelism and Wesleyan studies at Duke Divinity School, in a discussion Sept. 15 on the "Call to Action" report by the United Methodist Church. Dean Richard Hays moderated the discussion.

The "Call to Action" was formulated by the Connectional Table of the United Methodist Church in response to an initiative from the Council of Bishops. In the spring of 2011, the CTA Steering Team released a report Stephen Gunterthat analyzes the levels of vitality in contemporary Methodism and calls the church to redress the situation of increasing irrelevance in which the Church finds itself.

Gunter suggested that the “Call to Action” by the United Methodist Church succumbs to contemporary notions of social relevance at the expense of the Church’s historic missional and evangelistic identity.
