2009 Gardner C. Taylor Lecture Series
The 2009 Gardner C. Taylor Lecture Series on Sept. 29-30 will feature guest lecturer Alton B. Pollard III, who holds a Ph.D. from the Duke University Department of Religion and is dean and professor of religion and culture at Howard Divinity School in Washington, D.C.
Pollard specializes in the areas of African-American religion and culture, sociology of the black church, southern African studies, Pan-Africanist religious thought, American religious cultures and sociology of religion.
The Office of Black Church Studies sponsors the series. In this year’s opening event, Joy J. Moore, associate dean of Black Church Studies and Church Relations at Duke Divinity School, will deliver the message, “Playing the Enemy,” at a Sept. 29 worship service in Goodson Chapel. Pollard will present a lecture later that day, as well deliver another lecture Sept. 30 and preach at a worship service.
