Rich Payne, M.D. is an internationally known expert in the areas of pain relief, care for those near death, oncology, and neurology. He sits on the board of directors at the National Coalition of Cancer Survivors, the Hastings Center, and the Foundation for Hospice in Sub-Saharan Africa. He has received the Humanitarian Award from the Urban Resources Institute, the Janssen Excellence in Pain Award, and the Distinguished Service Award from the American Pain Society, of which he is a past-president.

Ray Barfield, M.D., Ph.D., is a pediatric oncologist and holds appointments at both Duke’s divinity and medical schools. He has spearheaded efforts at Duke to establish a pediatric quality of life care program. An author of dozens of publications in a range of genres including poetry, philosophy and medicine, he is currently working on a book manuscript entitled Poetic Openings: A Brief History of Philosophy’s Ancient Quarrel with Poetry.

Bebe Guill leads the Institute’s advancement program, developing and implementing strategies to help ICEOL reach its funding and strategic goals. A graduate of Duke Divinity School, she has extensive experience in palliative and end of life care, education, and research. She cultivates ICEOL’s relationships with current and potential corporate and foundation partners, sponsors, and individual donors; and develops and implements comprehensive fundraising and marketing strategies.

Jeanne Twohig served as ICEOL’s deputy director from 2005 to 2009, overseeing strategic direction and leading programmatic initiatives. In January 2009, Jeanne transitioned to Senior Advisor, guiding development of programmatic partnerships and spearheading activities designed to strengthen the provision of spiritual care at life’s end. Twohig is former deputy director of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Promoting Excellence in End-of-Life Care program and is nationally known for her work in palliative care, particularly to vulnerable and underserved populations.

Allen Verhey, Ph.D., taught for nearly 30 years at Hope College in Michigan. He has served as Director and Fellow of the Institute of Religion at the Texas Medical Center. He is now on the faculty of the Divinity School of Duke University as Professor of Christian Ethics. His research and publications have focused on the relation of Christian Ethics to issues in Bioethics. The anthology, On Moral Medicine, that he co-edited with Stephen Lammers, won a CHOICE award in 1987. His most recent book is Reading the Bible in the Strange World of Medicine.

Carl Weisner served as COO for a privately held registered investment advisor before joining the Duke ICEOL. A graduate of Duke University with a Masters in philosophy from the University Texas, Austin, he provides strategic direction and management of business and operations including: financial planning, budgeting, grant-administration, personnel, information systems, and space and facility planning.

Whitney Yadav provides general administrative support to the Managing Director and faculty, maintaining financial records and reporting, handling invoices and accounts payable. She also coordinates the licensing and distribution of departmental products such as Vesta, Dusk, and the Toolkit. She also is responsible for the supervision and coordination of the work-study students.
