Dave Odom, executive director of Leadership Education at Duke Divinity School, will be first speaker in a series of seven seminars in the 2012 Transition to Ministry Professional Development Series.

The series will focus on the three areas pertaining to the minister's vocational life: "Pastor as Person," "Pastor as Professional," and "Pastor in Community."

The Office of Student Life's brown-bag lunch seminar series, "Mentoring for Ministry Conversations with...," will feature Professor Ellen Davis as the guest this week.

Various guests are invited to the event to provide an opportunity for meaningful conversation between faculty, staff, community leaders, pastors, and students as Divinity School students prepare to enter ministry.

"Addressing Domestic Violence as the Church" Workshop with Dina Helderman

The Women's Center at Duke Divinity School will host a workshop on "Addressing Domestic Violence as the Church" with Dina Helderman, who formerly worked at Summit House and the Durham Crisis Response Center. She is now  the operations director at Leadership Education at Duke Divinity School.

This domestic violence training workshop will teach participants how to provide pastoral care to those affected by domestic violence, respond using Christian resources, and empower survivors, as well as work through actual case studies. 

Lunch will be provided.

Basin and Towel Chili Cook-Off

Basin and Towel will hold its Second Annual Chili Cook-Off to raise money to buy theological textbooks for Seth Mokitimi Methodist Seminary in South Africa.

The cost of $2 each for chili and dessert helps to ship one textbook. Anyone interested in cooking chili or bringing a dessert for this event may contact Basin and Towel. Attendees also should register for this event on Facebook so there will be enough for everyone.

People who knit or crochet are invited to a brown bag lunch to build community by working together to produce knitted items for donation to social ministries such as Open Table Ministries and Urban Ministries. The items will help people stay warm. No previous skill is needed, but participants must bring their own needles and yarn. Donations of unused yarn also can be made at Room 113, Gray Building.

The Duke Divinity School Centering Prayer Group holds discussion and prayer each Tuesday at the same time and location. The session is open to Duke University students, faculty and staff. Centering prayer is a method of contemplative prayer or Christian meditation, with an emphasis on inner silence. The weekly session includes practice of the prayer and teaching about the method. Those new to this form of prayer are welcome.
