Divinity Student Council Week "Spirit Day"

The Divinity Student Council will sponsor a "Spirit Day" in which Duke Divinity School students, faculty, and staff are invited to show school spirit and celebrate community by wearing Divinity School related attire. The event is part of DSC Week on Feb. 4-8. Prizes will be given for the most creative display of school spirit.

"Big Promises and the American Prosperity Gospel" with Kate Bowler

Manos Unidas and the Asian Theology student groups at Duke Divinity School will hold a discussion with Kate Bowler, Divinity School assistant professor of the history of Christianity in the United States, on "Big Promises and the American Prosperity Gospel."

The talk will examine the prosperity gospel's spiritual guarantees of health, money, and happiness. It will also explore how the movement originated and how churches around the world can fulfill a gospel of big promises.

Moving Prayer Service

The New Creation Arts student group at Duke Divinity School will hold a public Moving Prayer Service. Moving prayer is a physical practice for exploring non-verbal listening and communicating. Storytelling, prayer, and worship through postures and movements of the body will be practiced.

Deans' Basketball Challenge

Duke University deans and the Divinity School Office of Student Life are sponsoring the 2013 "Deans' Basketball Challenge." Divinity School students, faculty, and staff and their families may buy a $10 ticket for the event, which includes a reserved seat ticket for the Duke women's basketball game against Maryland, a T-shirt, and a pre-game community meal in The Divinity Refectory beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets and T-shirts may be ordered from a Student Life table to be located in the hallway of The Divinity Refectory from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 24 and Jan. 29-31.

 

 

Men & Mass Media: A Conversation About Faith & the Cultural Presentation of Masculinity

The Duke Divinity Women's Center will hold a brown-bag discussion with Duke Divinity School Professor Amy Laura Hall and Logan Mehl-Laituri, center co-coordinator and an M.T.S. student at the school, on the ways in which masculinity is displayed in contemporary American culture.

During the discussion, "Men & Mass Media: A Conversation About Faith & the Cultural Presentation of Masculinity," the ways these representations interact with men and women of faith will be explored in conversation and with the audience.

Pizza will be provided to the first 50 participants, and the session will be recorded for those unable to attend.

Artist Pilar Timpane to Discuss New Exhibit

Duke Divinity School New Creation Arts Group will sponsor a public discussion and presentation by M.Div. student Pilar Timpane on her series of photo portraits, "I'll Be Your Mirror," that are currently on display in the hallway outside of the Cokesbury Bookstore.

Divinity Women's Center Weekly Discussion Group

The Duke Divinity Women's Center is changing the date and time of its usual weekly discussion group meeting to Thursday nights at 8. Anyone is welcome to attend.

The center's spring semester kickoff of weekly discussion groups this Thursday will be on "Gendered Imagery of God." The group will discuss different overtly gendered images of God, their impact/importance to the church, and anything else related to the subject.
