Spanish Reading Group Meeting

The Hispanic House of Studies is launching a weekly Spanish Reading Group this spring facilitated by Professor Edgardo Colón-Emeric and Ismael Ruiz-Millán, director of the house.

The group will meet on Wednesdays for theological reading and reflection beginning Jan. 25. This is an opportunity to improve Spanish reading comprehension and build vocabulary.

The Hispanic House of Studies and the Caminantes (Walkers) group at Duke Divinity School will hold an open meeting, titled Aposento Alto (The Upper Room), for participants to improve their Spanish skills through reading the Bible, singing, and reflecting on Scripture in Spanish.

The Hispanic House of Studies at Duke Divinity School will hold a colloquium on “Wesleyan Liturgy from the Hispanic Perspective” featuring guest speaker the Rev. Irving Cotto, director of congregational development in the Eastern Conference of the United Methodist Church in Pennsylvania. He also is an accomplished musician who has composed hymns and leads worship events throughout  the country.

A free lunch will be provided. No registration needed.

Rural Ministry Colloquium: "Harvest of Dignity"

Thriving Rural Communities and the Hispanic House of Studies at Duke Divinity School will partner with Student Action with Farmworkers to host a film screening of the migrant farmworker documentary “Harvest of Dignity,” followed by a discussion. Attendees will prepare for Thanksgiving by learning about the workers who harvest the food they eat and how to make a positive difference in their lives.

A free lunch will be provided to the first 50 participants. No registration required.

Manos Unidas Welcome Lunch

Manos Unidas, a revived Duke Divinity School student group focused on ministry, fellowship and service with Latino communities, will hold a welcome lunch. Attendees will receive a free lunch featuring Mexican food.

The group discusses issues affecting the Latino community abroad and in North Carolina, including how the doubling of the Hispanic population in the last decade in the state has affected the corporate and local church. In addition to lunch discussions throughout the academic year, the group will sponsor excursions to ministries and non-profits working with Latino communities and provide opportunities to worship in Spanish.
