J. Kameron Carter, associate professor in theology and Black Church Studies at Duke Divinity School, will deliver a sermon at Duke Chapel as part of Duke University's 2012 Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration. The sermon, "When God Calls," will reference the life of King.

Veteran political strategist and commentator Donna Brazile and journalist Michele Norris of National Public Radio will headline a week of free campus activities during the commemoration.

The Duke University Sunday Worship Service will feature the Rev. Bonnie Scott, D'11, preaching. The associate pastor of Wesley Freedom UMC in Eldersburg, Md., she is the recipient of the 2011 David H.C. Read Preacher/Scholar Award. She was Duke University's first recipient of the nation’s most prestigious preaching award for Protestant seminarians and the first Methodist woman to receive the honor.

A Duke University Chorale and Duke University Wind Symphony Benefit Concert will feature Eric Whitacre as guest composer and conductor. He will conduct the chorale and wind symphony separately, followed by joint works featuring choral students from Durham high schools.

An accomplished composer, conductor, and lecturer, Whitacre was a visiting fellow and composer in residence at Cambridge University in 2010. As a conductor, he has appeared with hundreds of professional and educational ensembles throughout the world. In the last 10 years, he has conducted concerts of his choral and symphonic music in the U.S., Japan, Australia, China, Singapore, South America, and much of Europe.

Duke University Organ Recital Series Concert Featuring Mormon Tabernacle Organist

The Duke University Organ Recital Alumni Series will feature a free concert by Mormon Tabernacle organist Andrew Unsworth. He is one of three full-time organists at the tabernacle in Salt Lake City, where he participates in the daily recital series and accompanies the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on its weekly radio and television broadcast, "Music and the Spoken Word."

Unsworth received his Ph.D. in music from Duke in 2001, and he returns to the university as the second organist in the new "Alumni Series."
