Philip Howard: "Reclaiming Human Judgment in Public Choices"

Philip Howard, author of "Life without Lawyers" and "The Death of Common Sense," will discuss how the U.S. legal and regulatory system is broken and ways to begin fixing it. There will be a panel discussion moderated by Duke Divinity School Dean Richard Hays and including Dean of the Chapel Sam Wells, Professor Lawrence Baxter of the Law School, and Professor Joel Fleishman of the Sanford School of Public Policy.

The event is also part of Sanford's two-year series, “Gridlock: Can Our System Address America’s Big Problems?”

Professor Ellen Davis will chair a committee searching for a new Divinity School dean to replace Richard Hays, whose two-year term as dean will end with the 2011-2012 academic year.

Duke Divinity School will sponsor a reception honoring Bishop Kenneth L. Carder for contributions to the school and mark his June 30, 2011 retirement as the Ruth W. and A. Morris Williams, Jr. Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry.


The reception will immediately follow a public interview of Carder conducted by Divinity School Dean Richard B. Hays, George Washington Ivey Professor of New Testament, on “The State of the Church.” The interview will be from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. on the same date in 0016 Westbrook.

Carder will continue his work at the Divinity School by serving as the new bishop in residence and as a mentor to students in the newly developed Doctor of Ministry degree program, as well as teaching individual courses periodically.
