2014 Convocation & Pastors' School

Monday, October 13, 2014 - 8:00am to Tuesday, October 14, 2014 - 4:30pm
Duke Divinity School
Duke Divinity School at events@div.duke.edu

Duke Divinity School will host the 2014 Convocation & Pastors' School, an intensive two-day conference that offers lectures, worship, and seminars for Christian leaders of all traditions. This annual event is a collaboration with the North Carolina and Western North Carolina conferences of the United Methodist Church. The convocation also includes alumni gatherings.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Life after Christendom: Resident Aliens 25 Years Later.” It will examine the impact that the book, “Resident Aliens: Life in the Christian Colony” by Divinity School professors Stanley Hauerwas and Will Willimon, had on clergy, congregations, and seminaries. Published 25 years ago, the book challenged the Christian church to live as a vital embodiment of the Gospel, operating within today’s society but apart from its eroding values.

Speakers at this year's conference will include: Hauerwas, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor Emeritus of Divinity and Law; Willimon, professor of the practice of Christian ministry; James Davison Hunter, LaBrosse-Levinson Distinguished Professor of Religion, Culture, and Social Theory at the University of Virginia and executive director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture; Bishop Hope Morgan Ward, The United Methodist Church, North Carolina Conference; and Bishop Larry Goodpaster, The United Methodist Church, Western North Carolina Conference.
