"A 'Muscular' Jesus? Masculinity and Self-Control in the Lukan Passion Narrative" Lecture with Faculty Candidate Brittany Wilson
Duke Divinity School will hold a public lecture, "A 'Muscular' Jesus? Masculinity and Self-Control in the Lukan Passion Narrative" with New Testament candidate Brittany Wilson, visiting assistant professor of New Testament at the school.
The lecture will focus on Jesus' crucifixion in the Gospel of Luke to determine whether Jesus fits the Greco-Roman profile of a "manly man." According to Luke, Jesus' death does not conform to elite constructions of a "manly," self-controlled martyrdom. Jesus instead emerges as God's "suffering servant," who redefines the parameters of power and masculinity on the cross.
